It is shocking me, to believe I depart the country in four days, for 24 days in a foreign land. It is a bit surreal just sitting here, looking at my paperwork. Going through the plan in my head.
Bus Ticket: Check
Plane Ticket: Check
Passport: Check
Luggage: Check
The official plan is as follows:
On December 30th, at 8am, I will depart Traverse City at the Hall Street Station, on Indian Trails Bus Lines(Greyhound), to Chicago. Greyhound will stop at every town in Michigan, until It finally winds its way down to Chicago. Once in Chicago, I will leave the Greyhound station on Jefferson street, and walk the 5 blocks up to Madison Street to Oglevie Transportation Center, to eat. Having been here many times, it is a great place to grab some food rather cheaply, compared to Airport prices. After indulging myself repeatedly to McDonalds, Arby's, and Taco Bell, I will rest a bit, buy a book to read in the book store there, and then leave, and continue up Madison Street, across the bridge near the Opera House, another two blocks until there is the L train above me (blue Line). This, ironically, I have ALWAYS used to get on the trains. Mostly I like it because of the restaurants below... There is one, called Jamba Juice, which is the absolute BEST place in Chicago, in my opinion.
Well, once I get tired of gauking at all the buildings downtown Chicago, then I head back to the Blue Line Train, and go to O'Hare International Airport... The most hated place in the United States. So, in my free time, I will wander the halls concources, and tunnels of O'hare, riding the endless moving sidewalks everywhere, stopping to talk to the Pakistani magazine sellers and marval at the 1970's style, lime green and pastel colored, YMCA-looking shit they call modern art!. (like the color of this text)
Flash foreward the night, and I will be in O'hare that morning enjoying a 12 dollar Egg McMuffin at the McDonalds there. At 11:30am, I board Korean Air, and fly to Korea. I will then arrive in Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea. For those of you who dont know your Geography, South Korea is the GOOD Korea, not like the evil North Korea. I arrive there at 4:40PM, having crossed 12 time zones. The trip seems short because of the time, but I am not fooled, it is actually a 15 hour flight time, as I fly into the future and over the international date line. literally, I fly into 'Tomorrow'.
Three hours in Korea is all I have to enjoy this country (inside the awesome newly built airport, I hope), and then I fly off into the future another hour, to Hong Kong, in which, I arrive at 10:50pm on January 1st. So, for the first time in my life, I will not be watching the New York ball drop on NBC, but will be in the air, probably watching Patch Adams in the Korean Language, eating peanuts, not drinking, during my New Years. It is all worth it though.
I touch down in Kong Kong, with SumSum waiting for me at 10:50pm. And from there, the actions in my life are completely unpredictable, unknown, unspoken, and completely foreign to me, in a foreign country. This trip will represent the first time in my life I triumphed over what I once thought to be a far-fetched, and unobtainable goal.
